Downtown Pensacola project — building a more resilient energy grid
The five-year, $86 million downtown Pensacola project will modernize the 70-year-old network delivering energy to homes and businesses in the area. Launched in March 2018, the downtown Pensacola underground modernization project will improve reliability and resiliency for current and future customers. (see map below)
This modernization of the energy network system under the streets and sidewalks involves replacement of concrete-encased duct systems, power cables, transformers and protection equipment.
Additional signage has been posted to let residents and visitors know that businesses are open during normal business hours.
Please observe social distancing guidelines and remain at least 6 feet away from workers.
Information current as of February 2021
Preserving our history
We are working closely with the University of West Florida’s archeology department to preserve any artifacts found in the work area, such as this old wine barrel that was discovered last year. Researchers believe the barrel formed the base of a well from the early American period.
